Thrifty Finds Week 31

Isn't walking into a thrift store a great feeling. You know the great hunt has begun. What will you find with this hunt It's a great adventure. And there is that added benefit of how much less the items cost at the thrift store than at the regular store. And then compound it with the fact that you are recycling in one of the best ways around. Thrifting is really a great hobby. Here are a few of the thrifty finds for this week.
Here's a look at the entire group of items. All of them are really cool this week. Not so practical, but cool.
I love Moroccan designs, and this dish with that design jumped off of the shelf, and into my cart. I love the reds and yellows in the design. And I always wonder how it was come up with?
I absolutely adore the floral pattern on this little dress. I like the color combination of the pinks, blues, and some brown added to the mix. It's just cute!
I loved the little monkey on this pillow. And the trim is full of little sock monkeys. It was a must have. Super cute, and super fun!
And last but not least, I found some magazines to add to my collection. I absolutely love the cover of that Country Living magazine. There are so many things to look at.

Hope you enjoyed the items, and let me know what you have thrifted recently.

Bare Bones Staffing

I have heard individuals complaining in all areas about bare bones staffing. Yep, the great gift from the recession. Companies trying to do more with fewer and fewer individuals.

I have a friend who works in retail who tells me frequently, that the company she works for just won't have more people come in so there are lines of customers. She tells me how she feels like she has to take time with each customer, but she isn't always able to due to the number of people waiting to be helped. She doesn't understand why they just don't hire another person to work in her department.

I have another friend who works in social services who tells me they just keep adding individuals to her case load. She doesn't have time to deal with all of the individuals. But in spite of her growing caseload they won't add another individual to do more of the work.

And then there is my workplace. There are individuals who retire, and low and behold their jobs are eliminated. Boy, are people complaining about that.

So is this bare bones staffing plan working? Well, in some ways it is, the work is getting completed. But so many people seem unhappy in their professions anymore. I constantly hear that they like what they do, but it would be nice to have more people to help them out.

Should companies cut waste? Absolutely! But keep in mind the attitude of your workers. They are the backbone of how your company is presented to the world.

Great Moments From The Week

I thought it was time for me to share some of the great things that are going on in my life right now.

Elf

On Wednesday, I went to see Elf, the musical. It was a great way to kick off the holiday season. Most musicals just make you feel a little happy. Who can't smile when they see a grown man dressed in an elf costume anyway. And I can't wait to try Buddy's Hot Chocolate Monster. It sounds fantastic. And no I haven't forgotten about Thanksgiving. I am writing a post about the great moments in my life recently aren't I? And by the way those yellow elf shoes one of the actors wore in the show look like really fun shoes.

Wood

My neighbor uses a fireplace to heat his house when the weather begins to cool. I walked out today, and smelled wood burning. It has such a homey feel to it. And it is a true sign that cool weather has set in.

Extra Cash

I had to work an extra day last week due to the holiday. I wasn't too happy about it at the time. But it really did boost that pay check. And well November and December are the perfect times of year to get some extra cash isn't it?

So these are a few of the things I am thankful for and they truly are some of the great moments from the week.

5 Things Dancers Do Differently

The world is full of dancers and many of them are quite good. However, there are relatively few dancers who go on to greatness. All dancers have some habits that are similar. They have dance instructors. They have rehearsals, and they watch their diets.

However, phenomenal dancers do much more than what is required. Great dancers take their craft and the work they put into it to a whole new level. Let’s look at some of these differences between good dancers and great dancers.

mirza-causevic-334040.jpg
https://unsplash.com/photos/mdZiDhS-qZE
  • They are always a dancer

Many dancers are only dancers when they are a stage or in the studio. For that period of time, they are dancers. Beyond that, they add work out times into their lives. However, a great dancer is always a dancer. They arrange their lives around their craft. They are dancers first.
  • They are always prepared for what is next

A great dancer is always on guard for an opportunity. It may be an opportunity to work extra practice into a busy schedule or it may be the opportunity to audition for a show. They always have dance attire in their bag. The go through a lot of leotards, wraps, and tights. To keep on their budget they watch for dance clearance on Just For Kix and keep their dance bags stocked.
  • Health is always a priority

A great dancer is always on the go, so they are careful not to neglect their health. When he/she goes out for the day, they never know what will come their way. This is why they eat balanced meals and never are without a water bottle. They always have a natural protein supplement with them for hunger, energy, and protection of their muscles. This is the dancer who manages to always be at the right place at the right time.
  • Focus on minutes - not hours

A great dancer lives in the moment. They zero in on what they are working on and they only see “right now”. Even if they have been trying to accomplish a move for a couple of hours or even days, all they see is the moment at hand. This is how they manage to keep their motivation to achieve perfection.
  • They know when to stop

Based on what we have revealed above, you may be surprised to read this fact. A great dancer knows that rest and recovery is just as important as training, networking, and nutrition. They set their mental clock for quitting time. For many dancers, it is the dinner hour. When they reach the designated hour, they stop. They allow their bodies to recover and they prepare physically and mentally for their rest time.

Downtime is more than a time for rest. This is when even the greatest dancer hangs up their dancing shoes and reconnects with the people in their life. All of us need the nurturing support of those we love. The dancer who achieves super-star status is well balanced physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The Twilight Pariah

I recently read the book by Jeffrey Ford, The Twilight Pariah. And I thought I would share with you what I thought of this book.

The Story

Three high school friends reunite in the summer after their first year in college. One is studying archaeology, so doing her own personal dig sounds like a really great idea. She convinces her friends to help out. And they do find something extremely unusual. They find a skeleton, but it isn't an ordinary skeleton. It seems to have horns. Finding the skeleton turns these individuals lives upside down that summer. And they have an adventure that none of them anticipated or really wanted.

What I Think

I enjoyed reading this book. First it wasn't overly long. The author got right to the story. I liked how the story was spooky, but it didn't scare me out of my mind. And it really reminded me that some bones should just be allowed to rest. The characters in the book were fairly likeable, and it was a story that I could relate to. I liked how the one character stayed hoe some nights to spend time with her father. I think it is a real situation. Young people do worry about their parents. Does this book live up to the quote by Paul Tremblay stating "Richard Linklater meets Stephen King meets Indiana Jones Meets, well, Jeffrey Ford"? No it isn't over the top good, but it is a nice quick read that will creep you out a little.

Gentlemen Please Read This

Dear Gentlemen,

I have heard so many cases in the news recently of men who have had some sort of sexual misconduct in the past. This is quite disturbing, but not really that surprising.

I do believe that most men do not participate in this behavior. So I am not a man hater. But unfortunately there are those who have participated in extremely disrespectful behavior toward women. Unfortunately, these men have stirred up a conversation that is not pleasant.

I just thought I would remind all of you gentlemen that there really are whisper lists among women. It's a list you don't want your name on. And you should also remember that the truth comes out eventually so you might just want to fess up now if you have made a mistake in the past.

Have you ever felt like you just wish you could let everybody in the world see just how good their lives really are? You know like a George Bailey moment from It's a Wonderful Life. You wish that you could let people see that they will at some point get a return for all those good deeds they have performed? That's what I feel like today. The Stairway To Where?

While I was out walking the other day, I saw these steps, and then there was a gate. I wondered what exactly was behind that gate. Would it be something wonderful, or would it be something spooky? And then I thought to myself you never really know when you open up a gateway what will be behind it you just have to do it.

Natural Upholstery Cleaning Fail

I had this pillow that needed a little cleaning. There was this totally noticeable d=stain on the pillow. And of course it is a light color. I didn't want to send it through the washer because it might be hard on the fabric. So I looked for a natural way to clean it. But as you can see this was a natural upholstery cleaning fail. Here is what I used, and I cleaned the item.

You can see that dirt smudge on the pillow. It just looks gross. Here are the products I mixed to clean it.
The ingredients were equal parts vinegar and alcohol. And then I added 10 drops of peppermint essential oil. And then I placed them in a spray bottle. These were the instructions I saw and followed. I sprayed the mixture on the fabric, and began patting the pillow with a paper towel, and nothing really happened. It was disappointed. So I let it dry, and then tried again. Some of the dirt did come out, but not enough. And there was overwhelming scent of vinegar.

In the end I wound up sending the item through the washing machine. I know that a lot of natural cleaning mixtures work, but this one was not good for the item I was cleaning. And I don't recommend it.

Avocado Parmesan Dip

It's time to start looking for those items that you can take to those parties and carry ins that will be happening all through the holiday season. Here is a simple dip that you can make with items you might have around the house already. Well most of them are probably already in the house.

Here's What You Need

avocado
1 cup sour cream
2 garlic cloves
1/2 cup fresh cilantro
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon Worcester sauce
3 anchovies fillets
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Here's What You Do

Place the garlic, cilantro and anchovies in a food processor and process. Next add the avocado lime and lemon juice and process until the avocado is smooth. The lime and lemon juice will keep the avocado from turning brown. It's the acid in the juices going to work. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well in the processor. Remove the dip from the processor. This goes great with all sorts of chips, and it can be used spread for sandwiches. It tastes great on a grilled chicken sandwich.

The Typewriter

Typewriters are an item that belongs in the realm of collectors today, but once upon a time they were an important part of every college students life. In fact it was so important that my parents gave me a typewriter for Christmas one year. Yeah they were preparing me for what I needed when I made my first big trip into the world. I had my typewriter for college.

But the best career advice I ever received revolved around the typewriter. Mom told me take typing class. If you can type you can always get a job. She was right. I don't know how many jobs I have gotten because I knew how to type. Or is it called keying nowadays.

If I Were A Turkey

It's November. And that made me think about turkeys. And if I was a turkey what would I say to the world. And I thought to myself, maybe I would remind the world that even though I am a large bird that can feed a large group of people you can also feed a large group of people with a hog roast.

I would also remind everyone that each year the president pardons a turkey each year. And I would suggest perhaps he should pardon all turkeys this year.

Then I thought that it might be good to let the world know that modern turkey farming has changed the way my foreturkeys looked. I am much larger than he was. In fact some turkeys grow so heavy now their legs break.

But the most important thing is I'd warn the natives about the pilgrims.

Choosing The Right Pet Human

Those of you who have following my story know about a few months ago I picked a new pet human. This was a long process that, but I believe that I selected the right pet for me. There are a few things that each feline should keep in mind whenever they are selecting a new human. You will be spending much time with this individual so it is important that you get the right match. Here are a few of my suggestions on this matter.

First have a meet and greet with you potential pet. You should see if there are any other felines living in this home. Will you and all the members of that household get along?

Consider the age of the humans in the household. I am older and more mature so I did not want to live in a home with young children. They can be rough on a fellow, and I did not want to go through that.

When I discussed all members of the household, I mean all members including other animals. Personally, I am not real keen on living with canines they are just a lot of work. And who wants a kitten as a roommate. They just have too much energy, and there are times I find them annoying. I met my potential roommate Captain one afternoon. And after some discussion with him about territory, we decided that we could get along.

Please be sure to consider all of these items when you are choosing the right pet human for you.

You're The Star

The annual how does this work day was this week. I'm referring to the time change. There are just a few of us who have the honor of working when the time change occurs. Yep, Saturday nights at 2:00 am. And there is always the question which clock do we follow to know when we go home. It's a simple question. It's one with an easy answer. Just tell us when we come in to work which clock we need to follow. I'm just saying it can be a really simple thing to do. All you have to do is communicate with us.

This Is What I Do Now

A couple of months ago I was talking with a coworker. He told me that he has trouble getting depressed because he isn't able to be creative at work. He is right. There is little room for creativity at our job. He felt that this lack of creativity at work is causing him to be less creative in his personal life. He wanted to know how I dealt with this.

I told him I use the time when I am doing something I don't need to think about what I am doing at work to think about what I am going to write about. I think about what I have been reading recently. I listen to what people are saying and how it relates to the world around me.

But I told him that this is what I do now to earn money. I am able to do more creative things because of the money I earn. The problem is I don't have enough time to do all the creative things I want to. But that is just for the time being there will be a day when I will be able to spend more time doing my real work in life which is creating things.

Things That Made Me Happy Recently

Someone made me a little angry the other day. And I realized I could focus on their actions which upset me, or I could think about the things that have made me happy recently. I decided that I should focus on happiness.

So, here are a few things that have made me happy recently.

Fantasticon Fort Wayne was last Saturday. It's always so much fun to see everyone in costumes. It is fun to shop for geek items, and of course it is always good to spend time with friends. I absolutely love that these events are going to smaller cities now. It used to be you had to live in a major city in order to participate in them. Now they are coming to the rest of the world. Hurray!
I went to Day of the Dead celebrations at the local art museum this last week. Check out the post to see what it was like. I loved the colors of the exhibition. Outside there were several food trucks. One of the trucks was Flora and Lily's. I decided that I wanted some of their food. After I ordered I looked a little more closely at the sign on the sidewalk. The proceeds would be going to the victims of the Mexico City earthquake. It made me smile that someone was doing something positive that Sunday afternoon. And their food was delightful by the way.

I went out to a local restaurant on the first for Day of the Dead celebrations. There was a fabulous face painter there. Just look at how our faces looked after we got them painted by The Gypsy Face Painter at El Azteca. Thanks for making the day fabulous. And thanks to El Azteca for throwing the party!

Seeing all of the kids appreciate the music at the Black Violin show. It was so fun to see a young boy act like he was directing the orchestra as they played.

So what has made you happy recently?

Doorway

Walking is one of the ways I can clear my mind. I can think about whatever I want to, and there is always something interesting to see.
I saw this door while I was out walking the other day. It caught my attention. I wondered if the door was ever used. It does have some vines growing on it after all. I liked the color of the door. It is my favorite color after all. So I wanted to be able to remember that moment so I snapped a photo.

Goals For November 2017

October was a great month, and somehow Halloween came and went so quickly. And now it is time to set goals for the month of November.

In October I set a few goals so let's see how I did.

I wanted to add some pictures to my facebook page for Serendipity Created. I managed to get one photo added to this. So I did complete the goal, but not just as much of it I wanted to. Is there a pattern emerging here? I seem to say this about my goals a lot recently.

I wanted to get some of my bath bomb supplies organized in a file cabinet I have. They are now in the cabinet, and it is working much better. But I constantly have to remind myself to put the items away. I think I am just a cluttery person at times.

If you read my post Black Violin, you already know that I did get some tickets purchased. It was easy once I got myself moving, and I realized that the box office was open later than I thought it was. Hurray!

Yes, I did go through that notebook. And I did put some of those ideas into action. The notebook had some songs that I liked, and songs that I heard and wanted to listen to again, but I wouldn't remember to add to my listening lists. I added a couple of those songs to my post Recent Songs Listening List
I stopped adding to that notebook this month though because I was reviewing it. Isn't that weird?

Goals for November 2017

Recyclables

I really want to figure out how to use recyclable items in my gift giving. How do I do it without those items looking cheap and trashy? I will have to explore this, and get the project started.

Cards

Recently, a friend of mine asked me what is happy mail? I was surprised, I thought happy mail was self explanatory. But I want to start sending out more happy mail to people in my life. Let's see if I can get that going?

Storage Unit

I picked up a little item to help me store magazines and paper. It does need a little work, but it will be extremely helpful to me. I want to get that fixed this month.

November Walks

I did a project a couple of years ago with items I found on walks. I really enjoyed the project t, and I got some great exercise doing it. I want to do that during November. That means I need to get out walking.

So let's see how I do this month. Hopefully, I will be able to complete all of these goals.

Day Of The Dead

Today is the Beginning of the Day of the Dead celebrations. If you live in Mexico, this is a big deal. And the local art museum decided to do a celebration and an exhibition around Dia Los Muertos.

I am sure there are a few individuals who are saying what is this? On November 1 and 2 individuals build altars and say prayers for deceased members of their families. It's a family celebration. It's a time when individuals actually celebrate the lives of those they have lost.

Often we think that memorials of the ones we have lost need to be dark and dreary. But not in this celebration. It is full of color and life.

Here are a few of the pictures from this local celebration.
I absolutely love this piece that was part of the exhibition. I love how the artist used a guitar which is usually used to create different forms of art to make something totally different.
Frida Kahlo is one of the individuals I always think of when I see anything that celebrates traditional Mexican culture. She embraced it, and this is the altar that someone created for her at the local museum.

And then this one shows how all of the colors are put together to celebrate the loved ones.

So are any of you doing anything for Day of the Dead?

Second Chanes

We've all had times when we believe that we deserve a second chance. We've all made mistakes as kids that we regret through most of our lives. But are there some mistakes that don't deserve a do over?

In the late 1980's and 1990's, there were several cases around the country where juveniles who committed crimes were sentenced to life without parole. That was before everyone came to the realization the brain of a juvenile were not fully formed.

So in 2012, the Supreme Court ruled that juveniles could not be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. So individuals who had these sentences were allowed for the first time to have parole hearings.

And it seems that parole boards listened to the individuals. And some of these individuals did receive parole. They got a second chance at life with the general public.

Can you imagine what life is like for these individuals? They have in essence been taken out of the world, and then dropped back into it. Many of them have never held a job. How do they find a job? And they are one mistake away from being imprisoned again. And this time no chance to go back into the real world.

So far none of the individuals have been sent back to prison. Maybe it is a good thing they were given a do over.

Fall Weather

I did not realize that fall had set in until the other day. It was a normal day, I had informed my pet human that she must feed me promptly. And I had a good breakfast. Then it was time for me to spend some time sunbathing on the porch. My roommate and I marched toward the front door, and we sat there.

Our pet did not open the door for us. This caused some confusion. She told us it was cold out. We didn't believe her. It was a sunny day. We reminded her of our daily routine. It was to include time on the front porch. We need our fresh air.

So she opened the door for us, we went outside. And then that cool air hit us. We immediately turned around and came back in the house. She was right, it was a little cold out there. Fall weather has definitely set in.

A Very Victorian Halloween

Halloween is a rowdy holiday in this day and age, but in the day of the Victorians it was more subdued. It was seen as a holiday for entertaining. It wasn't a holiday concerned with death and the walking dead. So here is what a very Victorian Halloween might have been celebrated.
First, children were not the focus of these celebrations. It was much more a season of romance and love. (Sounds more like the focus of Valentine's Day doesn't it?) But magazines at the time were full of love stories that focused around Halloween. The stories included titles like "Love Lies A-Bleeding". It was a night of mystery for the Victorians.

And stories were told at those parties held during that time, but they were often used for matchmaking.

Much time was spent on planning a party for the season, and it started with the invitations which could be quite elaborate. Imagine receiving a Jack-o-Lantern with your invitation attached. A dramatic entrance was a must, And of course the houses were completely dark when you entered the party.

Games we have heard of like Bobbing For Apples were played, but there were some odd ones like "test of college colors". In that game females were blindfolded and they chose ribbons of different colors. The choice of the colored ribbons was supposed to predict the girls future husbands college alma mater.

And at the end of the party celebrants were sent home with souvenirs of the evening. They had gilded wishbones, "dream pills", or a penny for good lucky.

Seems like a very Victorian Halloween would be so much different than the parties we now attend doesn't it?

Black Violin

What happens when two guys play Mozart in orchestra class, and then spend the hour after listening to their favorite hip hop artists? You end up with a unique band called Black Violin.
These two young men are from Florida. They are classically trained musicians, who have blended their passion for their instruments with a sound that makes listeners want to dance. They have managed to come up with a sound that is all their own. They perform music that we expect to hear from these instruments, and then they add songs that we all hear on the radio. It makes people of all ages want to listen.

These young men, remind us that we should take our passions are make something new. We need to make them our own. And you never know what will happen. Maybe you will get full ride scholarships to college, and earn a living off of that passion like they have. And to these young men's credit, they haven't forgot how they started. They started out as students playing in their school orchestra. I really enjoyed seeing them perform with local orchestra students at the end of their show.

If you haven't seen these performers, you should. They will remind you of just what can be done with creativity and hard work.

What Drunk Wrote That Song

I was talking to a friend the other day. I asked if she had ever heard the song Everyday Is A Vacation.? She said no, who sings it? I wasn't sure at that point, but I had to share the lyrics with her. Everyday is a vacation, I love my vocation. Her immediate response was what drunk wrote that song?

I chuckled at her response, but at the same tie I thought it was just a little sad. Now, I don't love my vocation, but I am content with it. But I constantly hear individuals say I hate this job. It troubles me. I wonder why they don't try to do something different. If you ask, many of the individuals reply I can't afford to. Many of individuals spend forty hours at a vocation that hate. I thought how sad it is to be that unhappy for one fourth of their week.

Anyway, take a listen to the song, and let me know if you think a drunk wrote the song too.

Nature Always Wins

Fall has set in, and with fall come rainy days. Yesterday there was a storm. It rained off and on throughout the day. I was out and about today, and I saw this umbrella lying on the ground. I thought about how it wound up being a little twisted. I thought about how it was abandoned. I thought nature always wins. Just ask the people living in Peurto Rico if that is true or not, I bet they will answer yes.
